Драйз и Коннор сегодня вообще были никакие - так что не о каких очках не могло быть и речи. Ретти травмировался - жаль.

KURT LEAVINS

CAM TALBOT. 5. Had it not been for Cam Talbot this one would have been out of reach at the 1st Intermission. Quality saves off of Sorensen, Kane, Coutour and twice off of Donskoi kept the score 2-0 after 1 and gave his teammates a puncher’s chance. And for a while there during a decent 2nd frame it looked as if the Oilers might make a game of it. But then San Jose converted a bad turnover into an odd-man rush early in the 3rd Period and that was all she wrote. Stopped 26-31.

CONNOR McDAVID. 5. About as average of a night as Connor McDavid can have. Just a single shot on net. He didn’t have quite the acceleration we are used to seeing from him either. No real, glaring errors to dock him on. But when you play really good teams like the Sharks you need your best player to be the best player on the ice to win. And tonight McDavid wasn’t. Did represent a net-side diversion on the Kassian goal. Was also unceremoniously dumped twice by Sharks players in the neutral zone yet the zebras left their whistles in their pockets.

LEON DRAISAITL. 3. Committed two critical errors on the 2-0 goal. The first one, a pass through the middle of the attacking zone that was intercepted, I could accept. Offensive players will turn the puck over from time to time. Problem was Draisaitl then compounded that mistake with a complete lack of recognition of the late man (Evander Kane) moving up on the resulting play to turn what had been a harmless looking 2-on-2 into a deadly 3-on-2. 0 shots in 18:58. Not his night.

TY RATTIE. 5. Left the game after gamely blocking a shot from the point but apparently taking it off his left instep. He did not return. Had managed a single shot in about 8 minutes of work up until that point and looked to have a skip in his step.

ADAM LARSSON. 7. The Oilers best D-man on the night. Larsson had an All Events CF of 21-17 (55%). 2 shots, 5 hits and a block in 23:20. Drilled a post on a good feed from Draisaitl. Took an unlucky delay on game penalty that eventually led to the 3-0 goal, but let’s be honest…Larsson was in that position because he was trying to kill off a silly penalty by Zack Kassian. Hard to shoulder him with all of the blame for that.

OSCAR KLEFBOM. 5. The confidence that he played the Minnesota game with was not nearly as in evidence Saturday. 2 shots, 5 blocks, but also 3 give-aways. He looks susceptible to stick-lifts in his own won zone due to his broken finger. More of an observation than a complaint, really, as the club is damn lucky to have him back. But not nearly as dominant this evening.

RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS. 6. Scored his 17th of the year on the power play with a sharp snipe that beat Aaron Dell high. That narrowed the Sharks’ lead to 3-1, and made a game of it…for a while, at least. He and Chiasson were also a part of a 4-on-1 that failed to generate a single shot on net. 54% on the dot.

MILAN LUCIC. 6. A solid game. Very physical, leveling no less than 9 hits on the San Jose opposition. One in particular was a thundering blow that left big Brent Burns checking for license plates He would have had 10, but the referee saw fit to hand out one of the cheapest elbowing calls you are likely to see. Hard on the forecheck. Sent a hard blast at the net off a feed from Nugent-Hopkins.

ALEX CHIASSON. 5. A well-earned assist on the power play by chipping the puck over to Nugent-Hopkins on a goal-front scandal. But also made an un-veteran-like mistake by failing to get the puck deep at the Sharks blue-line while his mates were attempting to change behind him. San Jose reversed that error in short-order for an odd-man rush and the back-breaking 4-1 marker.

KRIS RUSSELL. 5. Bent but didn’t break. He and Nurse didn’t win the shot shares battle but Russell battled hard and mostly limited the damage. 2 hits and 3 blocks in 21:37. I think he’d be way better at around 18-19 minutes instead.

DARNELL NURSE. 6. A pretty clean sheet for Nurse and his partner. Nurse leveled 4 hits and added a hit and a block in 26:58. His weakest moment was when both he and Talbot were fooled on a nice fake by Kevin LaBanc on the 3-0.

BRAD MALONE. 7. Malone surely earned himself at least another game with a fine effort. Led the Oilers with 5 shots on net and added 2 hits in 13:07. Looked strong in between Lucic and Kassian on an energy line brought on out of necessity after the Rattie injury. Kassian sprung him on an early breakaway but he couldn’t convert. Just 20% on faceoffs. But a good performance.

JUJHAR KHAIRA. 4. Ended the night Dash-2, lost the scoring chances for and against quite properly. And Khaira did not seem to have any juice at all with Nugent-Hopkins and Puljujarvi after the Ty Rattie injury forced Hitch to shuffle his lines.

ZACK KASSIAN. 5. Skating well these days. A nice double-tip in front of the San Jose net turned into his 8th of the season. Unfortunately all the goal really accomplished at that point was to make the ultimate result look a little better than it actually was. I didn’t love the interference call he earned in the 1st Period. And while they technically killed it off, does Adam Larsson shoot that puck over the glass if he isn’t playing 5-on-4 because of #44?

BRANDON MANNING. 4. He and Gravel were guilty of backing into their goaltender on the 5-1. Also committed a giveaway in 11:12. Contributed some solid minutes back there as well. Just looked over-matched too often against a quality San Jose attack.

KEVIN GRAVEL. 3. I give Kevin Gravel credit for playing his weak side on the 3rd pairing, something he is not used to doing. But that challenge left him exposed against a strong San Jose club and left him -3 for the night. Not sure that’s all on him.

KYLE BRODZIAK. 3. The puck was headed in the wrong direction on his watch most of the night. Absolutely crushed in scoring chances for and against (a minuscule 3-15, 16% All Events CF). Did save a chance against with a nice play in his own slot in the 1st.

JESSE PULJUJARVI. 4. Had some jump but couldn’t convert it into much in the way of results. His best moment was a nicely executed back-check and take-away in his own zone in the 3rd Period. Didn’t look to have much chemistry with 93 and 16.

TOBIAS RIEDER.3. Can’t buy a goal, and it looks to be destroying his confidence. Did make a decent defensive play in his own slot early in the 1st. But man, is he ever spinning his wheels right now.
