это потому что он с Секерой в паре играет. уже не раз замечал, что Анджэй лишний раз пас Бене не отдаст, а хладнокровно поищет более надёжный вариант.

BRUCE MCCURDY, EDMONTON JOURNAL

#2 Andrej Sekera, 5. Oilers’ third pairing was by far their best, but that’s not saying a lot on this night. Earned an assist and posted a +1 on the night. That included 1 goal against when he was briefly paired with Nurse on a line change and was unable to clean up a 2-on-1. Had one great sequence in the o-zone when he played one-man keepaway long the right-side boards.

#4 Kris Russell, 4. Screened Koskinen (how is that even possible?) on the 3-2 goal. Funny thing about his game, he’s OK in the offensive zone but not so good at getting the puck headed in that general direction.

#6 Adam Larsson, 2. A very poor showing against his old team. Lost track of opponents behind him time and again and it cost the Oilers dearly. Lost Travis Zajac on the 2-2 goal in the dying seconds of the first, a PK fail that turned this game. Allowed a similar situation in the second, where Koskinen came up with a couple of rare saves but Edmonton took a penalty on the continuation, then failed to kill that one either. The he was late to the fair on Kevin Rooney’s tally on the rush that basically put it away at 5-2. Had nothing going on in the offensive zone (0 shots) other than one outside shot that was tipped by Gagner.

#12 Colby Cave, 4. Played 12½ minutes during which time New Jersey scored 3 goals. A victim of circumstance on a couple of them, but very much part of the problem on the 2-2 goal late in the first. Didn’t have much going on offensively.

#16 Jujhar Khaira, 5. Was one of the more involved Oilers with 6 hits, 3 shots, and an assist on the first Edmonton goal when he helped to force a bad clearing pass, then got a piece of the point shot that was tipped twice on its convoluted path into the net. Drew a penalty on a hard charge to the net front. But his line had its struggles on the defensive side of the puck.

#19 Mikko Koskinen, 2. A brutal night when he just didn’t seem to be in sync. Bad handling the puck with a team-high (!) 3 giveaways, including a couple of whoppers that left him in a bad spot, out of his net without the puck. Those didn’t burn him, but his inability to stop the puck sure did. The opening goal was a decent shot that he got a big piece of with his blocker, but somehow managed to waffle the puck up one side of the mountain and down the other and into his feet where he kicked it into his own net. Was beaten from range (officially 53 feet) by Damon Severson point shot, and from range (48 feet) and a bad angle on John Quenneville’s first of the season from the side boards that finally drove him from the net midway in the second. 18 shots, 14 saves, .778 save percentage.

#22 Tobias Rieder, 4. Lost his stick and contributed to the chaos on the Quenneville goal. Got nothing done at the offensive end. Did get himself into decent shooting position on one occasion but decided to pass it off … to nobody. His mysterious goal-scoring drought has reached 56 games, and his offensive confidence matches his goal total.

#25 Darnell Nurse, 3. Just an egregious mistake on the game’s first goal when his weak shoot-in got picked off just inside the blueline, then he compounded the error by half-heartedly chasing the shoot-in in a futile effort to pinch off the counter-attack. Bam! 2 on 1, goal. Part of the screen of Talbot on the 3-2 goal. At the offensive end he attempted 7 shots but exactly 0 of them hit the target (4 blocked, 3 wide). Had 0 hits and played a ragged game throughout.

#27 Milan Lucic, 5. Left it all out there early in a humdinger of a fight with Kurtis Gabriel that saw the two heavyweights throwing haymakers for over a minute. Played just 7:30 in his return from injury. 0 shots, 2 hits.

#28 Kyle Brodziak, 4. For the second time in the homestand he played a role in a critical failed penalty kill in the last minute of the first period, this time losing the draw and then completely whiffing a chance to clear the zone a few seconds later. Puck never did get out. Also made a feeble clearing shot on a second period 3v4. Played just 7 minutes, mustering 2 shots, 3 hits, and a decent 6/9=67% on the dot.

#29 Leon Draisaitl, 6. His 14-game point streak came to an end, but not for want of trying. Was involved in two of Edmonton’s goals, winning a possession battle and feeding the point in the build-up to Chiasson’s powerplay goal but was the fourth-l;ast person to touch the puck. Then won a face-off and screened the netminder on Benning’s goal, but again three other players handled the disc after he did so no point. Won a few battles, with 2 takeaways to lead the team. Made a splendid defensive play to hustle back and break up a 2-on-1 caused by a weak Russell pass. 9/20=45% on the dot. Drew a penalty, hit a post, and chipped in on 7 of Edmonton’s 13 Grade A scoring chances vs. 0 against. Played over 26 minutes — a ridiculous amount for a forward — for the 3rd time in 5 nights.

#32 Anthony Stolarz, 3. Came on midway through and failed to stop the bleeding when he allowed a goal within 4 minutes on what seemed a stoppable shot. Faced 3 Grade A scoring chances and allowed 2 goals. Rebounds are a terrifying adventure with this guy. 17 shots, 15 saves, .882 save percentage.

#39 Alex Chiasson, 5. Scored his 20th goal of the season to cap off an impressive powerplay late in the first, seconds after hitting the post on a very similar play. But the temporary 2-1 lead that goal created disappeared with Chiasson in the box for an unnecessary slashing infraction. All 3 of his shots came on the powerplay, including a neat between-the-legs attempt, but he got very little done at even strength.

#43 Josh Currie, 5. A couple of nice hits but a quiet game overall, if one can consider under 6 minutes of ice time “a game” at all. 1 shot, 1 block.

#44 Zack Kassian, 5. A decent game with 4 hits and 4 shot attempts (1 on goal). His overpursuit of the play was part of the problem on the powerplay goal that put Jersey ahead to stay.

#77 Oscar Klefbom, 2. Good to see him back in the line-up after last game’s misfortune, but he had a very rough night, being torched for a goal against while on the penalty kill, at even strength, and on the powerplay. Turned the puck over with a weak clearing shot seconds before the 2-2 goal, and his misplay of a clearing shot gifted a shorthanded breakaway to Blake Coleman to end all hope with 8 minutes to play.Fired 9 shots toward goal but 7 of them were blocked.

#83 Matt Benning, 7. Oilers’ best defenceman on this night, with impressive stats to back up that observation: 5 shots, 3 blocks, 2 hits and 1 takeaway, solid flow-of-play metrics, contributions to scoring chances of +3/-0, and oh yeah, boxcars of 1-1-2, +2 His ability to get his point shot through and on target (5 on net, 0 misses,. 0 blocked) stood out on a night the Oilers really struggled to get their shots and passes through the thicket. Besides the one-timer that beat Corey Schneider cleanly, he also fired a point drive that was tipped twice on its way into the net.Drew a powerplay when he was on the receiving end of a nasty crosscheck.

#89 Sam Gagner, 5. A couple of dangerous deflections, one of which found twine. Some crafty plays with the puck, but also 2 giveaways.

#93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 4. A couple of dangerous shots early in the game, but gradually had less of an impact on it. Drew a penalty at what might have been a key time had Oilers been able to do something on the powerplay that followed. Took a slashing penalty of his own out of sheer frustration, deep in garbage time. Has been stuck on 36 assists for 10 games now. 4/11=36% on the dot and a couple of giveaways as well.

#97 Connor McDavid, 7. Gets a +1 in his grade for reaching 100 points for the third straight season, reaching the milestone with a pair of primary assists on sweet passes to Chiasson and Benning. Chipped in on 7 of Edmonton’s 13 shots, but just 1 of those dangerous looks came off his own blade on a breathtaking third period rush. While he keeps piling up the apples he’s lost the finishing toch lately, with just 5 goals in his last 19 games. A couple of late game defensive issues, including a slow backcheck on the shorty when he slowed down and tried to push Klefbom into position rather than continuing the chase himself. 4/6=67% in the faceoff circle. Struggled to get his shots and passes through, especially against NJD captain Andy Greene who had a whale of a game. McDavid looked a biut tired, but that shouldn’t be surprising for a guy who logged a whopping 26:40, second only to Draisaitl’s 26:52. Tiring work playing those kinds of minutes, especially on nights when too many teammates don’t come along for the ride.
