BRUCE MCCURDY, EDMONTON JOURNAL

#4 Kris Russell, 5. About the best of the Oilers defencemen, he missed 18 minutes of action after blocking a shot with his face. By the time he returned the score had crashed from 1-0 up to 1-4 down. His return did stop the bleeding to some degree, as the four other defencemen were running on fumes at that point.

#6 Adam Larsson, 2. Fed a suicide pass to Chiasson that led to the big hit, then made matters much worse in the aftermath with his elbow on Tynan, who went down heavily even as he ultimately never missed a shift. Of all the elbows I’ve seen over the years I don’t suppose that one ranks in the top thousand, but the game has changed and so have the rules. A major was called at the time, stood up to iPad review, and that was that for Mr. Larsson.

#15 Josh Archibald, 5. Played with reckless abandon, surviving three hellish collisions with the boards. Twice he had the legs taken out from under him by a sliding defender, the third time when he got crunched by big Nikita Zadorov and caught a flailing elbow (!) in the process. That one drew an actual penalty call which was negated when Archibald went right back at Zadorov despite giving up 8 inches and 60 pounds to the massive blueliner. Say what you will about Josh Archibald, just don’t say he lacks gumption. Took a penalty for a frustratingly lame interference call that paled in comparison with some of the spills he took, but so it went for the Oilers on this night. He was good on the penalty kill, especially on the 3-on-5 when he killed about 15 seconds with a solo rush. But he gave those seconds back when he was trapped in the sin bin without a helmet after his coincidental penalty expired. Struggled mightily to handle the puck cleanly, a common malady on the Oilers. Played a role on Khaira’s goal by staking out space near the blue paint.

#16 Jujhar Khaira, 6. Returned to the line-up from a 2-game absence and announced his presence with authority when he thumped big Zadorov on his first shift. Soon thereafter he opened the scoring on a play where he controlled the puck for fully 15 seconds. One good bounce in there (a blocked shot ricocheted right back to him) but he simply overpowered his man along the end wall, then took it out front on the far side and found a hole in Philipp Grubauer, with most of the work being done on his backhand side. Not only did he score the Oilers’ only goal, he also drew their one and only powerplay of the night when he split the defence and got tripped right into the net. Otherwise struggled to make clean plays with the puck, especially inside his own territory.

#18 James Neal, 4. His line was chasing the game. Neal’s flyby along the boards contributed to the sequence of pain on the 1-1 goal. 2 shots and 2 hits but a non-factor to these eyes.

#19 Mikko Koskinen, 8. He was extraordinary during a second period which played like one extended Colorado powerplay. Faced 14 Grade A chances in that frame alone and was left to his own devices frequently. Flashed the leather on a couple of spectacular grabs, made a few pad saves in tight, and managed to get some part of his body in front of a variety of deflections, one-timers, and breakaways. The best Oiler by one hundred country miles. 50 shots, 46 saves, .920 save percentage.

#23 Riley Sheahan, 4. Found a way to miss the net from about two feet in front of it when he somehow sand-wedged his shot over the crossbar. Decent on the PK in a massive 5:25. Just 4/13=31% on the dot on a night the entire team struggled in this department (17/48=35%), which played its part in the lopsided territorial battle.

#25 Darnell Nurse, 4. Earned his 100th NHL point on Khaira’s goal. Led his team with 27:59 ice time and 7 shot attempts. Made a brutal pass on the 4-1 goal which handcuffed his partner and turned an Edmonton possession into an open shot from the slot in 2 seconds flat. Rightly took exception when J.T. Compher smoked Koskinen, but his retaliatory penalty cancelled yet another Oilers powerplay on a night the “even-up calls” all went in one direction. I didn’t mind that one; it was at a point of the game where individual Oilers needed to stand up and be counted as they were being run right out of the rink.

#29 Leon Draisaitl, 4. His best moment came 15 seconds in when he jumped on a loose puck and sent a glorious cross-ice feed to Kassian that forced an early big stop from Grubauer. Had a decent first period and made a couple of good defensive stops, but gradually disappeared right out of the game as Edmonton’s big guns fell silent. Took a bonehead tripping penalty with 2:05 left in the five-minute major, but somehow Koskinen and the PKers weathered that storm. Just 5/15=33% on the dot and only 1 shot on net.

#39 Alex Chiasson, incomplete. Played just 4:43 before leaving the game with an injury after getting smoked by Graves. Had little impact on it pro or con before that impactful moment.

#44 Zack Kassian, 4. Played physically with 6 hits and 2 penalties. Wasted a couple of promising possessions with indecisive handles of the puck, once stickhandling himself into the corner on what started out as a 3-on-2. Had the one great early chance but couldn’t convert. His night was summed up when he took a run at an opponent, missed him, and went head-first into his own bench.

#52 Patrick Russell, 4. Stood out by virtue of making zero defensive blunders. Had one good scoring chance, did well on the PK, but his line had its show run at even strength.

#60 Markus Granlund, 3. 0 shots, 0 hits, and about that much impact on the game.

#74 Ethan Bear, 4. With the d-corps reduced to just four players for a long stretch, he played a massive 26:06. Made a few good plays with the puck, but looked every inch a rookie without it. 3 giveaways and some troublesome moments on a night his team was chasing the game.

#77 Oscar Klefbom, 2. About as bad a game as I’ve seen him play. Got cranked by the pesky Nazem Kadri in the early going. Did chip in nearly 6 minutes on the PK, but at evens his decision-making and execution were both badly lacking. Made two absolutely horrendous pinches that both ended in (the first two) goals against off the resultant jailbreaks . Made mistakes on no fewer than 9 Grade A scoring chances against, and ended the night a richly-earned -3.

#82 Caleb Jones, 2. Similar to Klefbom he was involved in just 1 scoring chance for, a ghastly 8 against. Was in over his head against Nathan MacKinnon who flew past him on a number of occasions in all three zones. Lost a key puck battle to MacKinnon that the Avs star deposited directly into the gaping Oilers cage for the 3-1. Looked every inch the rookie he is in this one.

#89 Sam Gagner, 3. Effective as he was in Arizona, he was about that ineffective in Colorado. A day late and a dollar short all game. 1/7=14% on the dot summed up his night.

#91 Gaetan Haas, 3. One of the more noticeable skaters on the Oilers, but was ineffective with or around the puck, and struggled mightily just to hold on to his stick.

#97 Connor McDavid, 4. Had a couple chances late in the first period but that was about it. Bobbled the puck on numerous occasions, especially in the middle frame where the disc never did seem to settle down on any Oilers stick. Missed the net from point-blank range after a nifty Draisaitl set-up that left him looking skyward. It’s a rare game that #97 gets outskated by the other team’s star player, but MacKinnon was the faster, better, more dialled-in player on this night and the same could be said about his team.
