David Staples, Edmonton Journal:

Connor McDavid, 6. He’s got to be jealous of Draisaitl’s linemates by now. McDavid made an early turnover by the net that led to two Grade A chances against. A moment later he stickhandled out of the corner for a dangerous slot pass to Alex Chiasson. He created something out of nothing, using his speed on a three-on-three to break in, then feed Leon Draisaitl on a one-timer in the second. In total made contributions to five Grade A scoring chances, which is pretty good on the attack.

Sam Gagner, 3. His lack of foot speed showed in the first when a Preds defender caught up to him on an Oilers two-on-one break. Gagner made a turnover late in the second that led directly to Nashville’s second goal. He got called on a cheap high-sticking call on a backhand dump-in follow through. Late in the third he did show himself fast enough to beat Mattias Ekholm on a rush down the wing for a Grade B chance on net.

Alex Chiasson, 5. Neither he nor Gagner had their feet moving fast enough. They seemed to be watching McDavid rather than driving hard. That never works. Chiasson was late to the point late in the second, which was part of the sequence of pain on Nashville’s second goal. All that said, he did screen the goalie on the key play late in the second leading to Edmonton’s lucky bounce and game-changing first goal.

Leon Draisaitl, 9. Looked like the best player in the world this night, just as he has many nights this year. Draisaitl made a major contribution to 12 Grade A scoring chances, an astounding total. Twelve! His line was easily the best for Edmonton. He got the Oilers going in the first, making two fine cross-seam feeds, one to Kailer Yamamoto and a second to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins but both players could not score on quick shots. He set up Oscar Klefbom with one of his fine backhanded feeds in the slot for a dangerous opportunity late in the second. In the third, he finished off a great RNH feed by firing in a shot off the post and into the net. Then he ripped one in on the power play.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 8. Great game. He made a major contribution to nine Grade A scoring chances. He and Matt Benning allowed a scary cross-seam pass on the penalty kill in the second, only to have shooter Dante Fabbro put the puck off the crossbar. But RNH made a strong backcheck on Viktor Arvidsson in the defensive slot in the third. A moment later he did the Full Draisaitl, whipping a beauty cross-ice backhand pass and sending in Draisaitl steaming down the wing for the tying goal. He also set up Draisaitl on his one-timer power play winner.

Kailer Yamamoto, 7. He made all kinds of smart plays all game long. He went hard to the net to jam in a goal in the first, but the whistle had been blown. He got beat by Matt Duchene in the d-zone in a drive to the net during 4-on-4 play in the first. He had a second fine jam shot in the second off a wrap-around by Oscar Klefbom. His clever zone exit pass got the puck moving in the right direction on Edmonton’s tying goal. He’s showing himself to be a dangerous attacker in a top line role.

Riley Sheahan, 5. Nothing too good and only one thing really bad. He mad a mental error early in the second, failing to clear the puck deep when he had time in the d-zone, which meant him and other tired penalty killers could not get off the ice. This immediately led to a dangerous slot shot by Roman Josi. But was otherwise solid enough and won 12 of 16 faceoffs.

Jujhar Khaira, 3. Khaira finally got his feet moving and put Nick Bonino into his own bench with a check in the first. But a ho hum game overall. He made a brutal neutral zone turnover late in the third that led to some scaring attacking moments for the Predators.

Josh Archibald, 7. He was buzzing around all game, often with good results. He led the team with six hits. He got off a dangerous shot on a scramble play late in the first. He kept up the Edmonton custom of missing a wide open net with his empty-net attempt in the third.

Zack Kassian, 4. He got caught flat-footed on a scramble play and his man Craig Smith scored in the first. Otherwise wasn’t much in the game.

Gaetan Haas, 4. He only got a few shifts. This line finally had some offensive zone time half-way through the third period.

Tyler Benson, 4. Same as Haas.

Ethan Bear, 7. He was sharp, making a number of fine passes and defensive plays. With the Oilers failing to generate much on the attack he took matters into his own hands and went hard to the net a few times in the second. He won a key PK battle behind the net in the third, fishing out the puck and icing it. He and Nurse did get beat by Granlund for a scary shot attempt late in the third. Bear does make a few turnovers but that’s expected for someone who handles the puck so much.

Darnell Nurse, 3. Not all sharp this game, making turnovers and icings, taking weak point shots and finding himself out of position. Losing your stick on the first shift is one thing but going right by your own players bench and not grabbing one from helping hands? Brain cramp by Nurse and it led to him not having a stick to clear the puck in the defensive slot. His woes kept up in the second when a Preds attacker bulled around him on a rush, forcing Nurse to take a penalty. Not his best game. Maybe his worst of the season.

Oscar Klefbom, 8. He brought his “A” game. He showed excellent hustle on the backcheck in the first to stop a Nashville slot shot. Missed the net on a sweet Drai feed late in the second, but made all kinds of strong plays with the puck. His work on the power play is under-rated as he constantly gives the puck to McD, Drai and RNH in just the right spot. He was great right down to his final clearance of the puck out of the Edmonton zone with 14 seconds left and Nashville pressing hard.

Adam Larsson, 5. His lack of passing and shooting came was noticeable this game. Maybe it’s time for Evan Bouchard?
Matt Benning, 5. He was unable to tie up Nick Bonino’s stick in the slot on Nashville’s second goal. Was otherwise solid.

Caleb Jones, 7. He came out sharp, making all kinds of heady plays with the puck. He made a fine play in the first, beating an oppressive Nashville press by flipping the puck high to a breaking Josh Archibald. Later that same period, he found a way to get a point shot into the slot (something many Oilers d-men struggle with) and it bounced around until Josh Archibald got off a hard shot. He is still earning the trust of the coach and played little in the third.

Mike Smith, 7. Made three early saves after Nurse lost his stick early in the first. He did not look sharp on the first Preds goal but came up with a stupendous save early in the second, stoning Mikael Granlund who had all kinds of time alone in the inner slot to work his scoring magic. That was a major moment in the game.
