Player grades Bruce McCurdy • Edmonton Journal:

#4 Kris Russell, 5. Mismatched against Milan Lucic on the first Calgary goal, when the diminutive defender was unable to clear the gargantuan Flame out of Smith’s sightlines. Did contribute nearly 23 minutes on a bend-but-don’t-break pairing with Larsson, blocking 4 shots along the way. Gave Gaudreau a bit of a shot during a scrum.

#6 Adam Larsson, 6. He too lost a battle on the first Flames goal when slippery Andrew Mangiapane managed to shake free from his clutches. Otherwise played the sort of reliable game Oilers fans have come to expect from the dour Swede, and took a couple of pounds of flesh along the way. 3 hits to lead all Oilers defenders, in 22:52 of ice time. Played all but 30 seconds of the last 3 minutes, and made an important (though uncredited) block of a Sam Bennett shot from the slot in the late stages.

#13 Jesse Puljujarvi, 5. One good one-timer from the slot that tested Markstrom early, but had his struggles being to cute with the puck. One glaring example was on a clearing attempt 10 feet inside his own line at the end of a sequence where Smith had lost his stick and desperately needed a clear or even an icing. Instead JP tried to finesse it past the point man and failed to do so. The other was when he was the relay man between Draisaitl and McDavid but babied a pass into McDavid’s skates rather than crisply on his tape or somewhere in front of him, either of which would have resulted in a breakaway. Posted poor possession numbers (shot attempts +5/-10) on what should be a high-powered line.

#14 Devin Shore, 5. Quiet but effective in 10 minutes of action on a line with Khaira and Chiasson. Oilers largely controlled possession with that unit on the ice, and had zero issues on the defensive side of the puck.

#15 Josh Archibald, 4. It was his point man who had all day from centre point to blast home the first Calgary goal through traffic, Arch’s screen being part of it. Was among those responsible for a five-bell chance on a Flames powerplay, though Smith had his back. Later made an exceptionally poor turnover in the neutral zone after a long Flames’ possession; had time to get the puck to the red line, dump it in, and change, but instead tried a cross ice pass to Kassian which was picked off and brought right back into Edmonton territory leading to the two best scoring chances of the entire minute-long sequence. Had 3 hits including a heavy dart on Juuso Valimaki. Chipped in a team-high 2:05 on 2 successful penalty kills, and played the last 93 seconds of regulation on a line with Draisaitl and McDavid which speaks highly of the coach’s trust in this player.

#16 Jujhar Khaira, 7. Played a strong two-way game, leading Oilers forwards in both shots (3) and hits (5) while posting excellent shot shares (7-3 EDM on his watch). 3/7=43% on the dot, but won more than his share of one-on-one battles elsewhere on the sheet.

#21 Dominik Kahun, 7. Celebrated his return to the line-up with a goal, when he went to the net hard to convert Yamamoto’s feed, ultimately depositing both the puck and himself into the back of the net. Handled the puck well and made a couple of slick feeds. Drew an important powerplay in the late going that helped the Oilers take two important minutes off the clock.

#22 Tyson Barrie, 4. Had all kinds of trouble getting the puck past his man at the offensive blueline. His attempt to beat Johnny Gaudreau up the wall with a pass was sealed off, and Gaudreau managed to squirt right past Barrie for a partial breakaway that Smith stopped. Took a nasty little crosscheck in the back from Brett Ritchie on that sequence that sent him careening into Smith, leaving both Oilers a little shaken up. Made a bigger mistake at the end of an Oilers powerplay when he failed to get his point shot past Sam Bennett in the high slot, with the Flames quickly pouncing on the loose puck to feed Matthew Tkachuk who jumped out of the penalty box, received the gift, and beat Smith with a nifty deke. The point man needs to do better in that situation, especially if he’s still the only d-man on the ice as Barrie was in that instance. In all he had 4 shot attempts and every single one of them was blocked. Third straight game he’s been a minus player, and he took a few hard knocks along the way.

#25 Darnell Nurse, 6. His pairing with Barrie had the short end of possession, with shot attempts of +10/-21 during his 20 minutes at 5v5. Did win a number of battles along the way, a few of them with an active stick that dislodged a few pucks. Made a nice recovery to angle off Gaudreau after his partner’s turnover. Delivered a crucial shot block on Elias Lindholm’s shot that appeared to be headed for a wide open net with Smith down and out, but was miraculously blocked by Nurse’s stick. Was victimized for a Grade B chance in the last 20 seconds when he bit on Gaudreau’s inside move, but Smith was able to blocker aside Lindholm’s angled shot from the faceoff circle. Played a whopping 27:23 to again lead the club.

#29 Leon Draisaitl, 9. Played a wonderful two-way game, especially on the defensive side of the puck which he tracked relentlessly in all three zones. Won possession time and again with slick stick-lifts or hard physical marking, and once he gained possession was excellent in transitioning the disc north. Made a superb backcheck on Gaudreau to turn a dangerous looking Flames rush into a counterattack the other way that very nearly sprang McDavid. Made another to steal the puck off of Sean Monahan, then make a great outlet pass while being sandwiched by both Monahan and Ritchie. Found time to contribute to all three Oilers goals. Made a great one-touch feed to McDavid for a glorious powerplay chance which produced Markstrom’s best save of the night, then won a puck battle on the rebound to chip the puck to RNH, who made the deposit. Was the middle man of a splendid give-and-go with Bear to set the stage for the second tally, though both his linemates later touched the puck so no assist there. After making the pass of the night off the backhand side of his stick to Yamamoto in tight for a chance that narrowly missed, he won a powerplay faceoff directly to McDavid for the game winner. Overall won 11/17=65% of his faceoffs on a night the rest of his team went 8/27=30%. Played the last 2:37 of the game as the Oilers grimly held on to the lead, and contributed a pair of important zone clearances in the dying seconds. Played with a burr in his saddle all night, engaging in a heated scrum with Tkachuk that landed both in the penalty box. Oh yeah, also led the Oilers with 7 shot attempts, 3 of them on goal.

#39 Alex Chiasson, 8. Had some jump in his step after a couple of games in the press box. How’d he get to 8? Start with 5, add +1 for his strong two-way game at 5v5, which included several nice passes, a couple of decent shots on net, and solid grinding along the walls; +1 for his contribution to the first Oilers powerplay goal, when he made a slick one-touch pass to Draisaitl in the slot; +1 for his contribution to the second Oilers powerplay goal when he engaged Joakim Nordstrom’s stick off the draw, creating just enough time and space for McDavid to get his shot off. No points to show for either of those goals, but got the job done on both. And no minuses of any description as he played his usual safe defensive game.

#41 Mike Smith, 8. Another fine game for the big netminder. Beaten by one point blast he never saw, and by a fine deke and roof job on a breakaway. Otherwise slammed the door shut, with a little help from his post on one occasion and from Nurse on another. But made a number of fine saves along the way, several of them through heavy screens. Made a terrific glove save off Sean Monahan’s drive from the slot Handled the puck with his usual aplomb, and simply put was the better ‘tender on the night. Appeared slightly banged up when Barrie was sent flying into him. Also seemed to be considering taking a shot at the empty Flames net with a minute or so to play, but thought better of it. 26 shots, 24 saves, .923 save percentage. Now sports “goalie boxcars” of 13-3-1, 2.39, .919 on the season.

#44 Zack Kassian, 5. On the positive side, had 2 shots, 3 hits, and was generally involved. On the negative, he was slow identifying the true danger man on the first Calgary goal even as he was close enough to the scene to possibly get in the shooting lane. Then took a bad penalty in the last tick of the middle frame when he nailed Nordstrom right in the numbers, putting his team at a disadvantage to start the third. Luckily they had his back and killed it off.

#56 Kailer Yamamoto, 8. He too found a way to contribute to all 3 Oilers goals, drawing the penalties that led to both powerplay tallies and setting up the middle one directly with a superb goal mouth pass that Kahun tapped home. Pressured Markstrom into a poor turnover and barely missed making the deposit Skated with energy and purpose all night long, and in both directions.

#74 Ethan Bear, 8. Anchored the third pairing and put in a strong performance in 13:24 of ice time. Was central to the Oilers lone even-strength goal, making a superb stretch pass to Draisaitl, getting on his horse to gain the zone in time to receive Leon’s return pass, then immediately find Yamamoto breaking on the far wing with a tape-to-tape pass. Terrific vision shown there to find the player by eye, let alone with the puck. Kept a clean sheet defensively, not being burned for a single Grade A chance against. Did solid work on the penalty kill, and made a fabulous sliding play to break up Tkachuk’s favourite move at the edge of the crease in the very late going.

#82 Caleb Jones, 5. Mostly OK in his return to the line-up. Made a nice play deep in the offensive zone to help set up a Puljujarvi one-timer. Oilers did outshoot the Flames 5-3 on his watch. Played just 8:31, though, including none at all in the final 6 minutes after he coughed up the disc leading directly to a decent chance for Nordstrom.

#91 Gaetan Haas, 4. Made a better door than window on the first Flames goal, when he was part of the traffic in the slot. Managed 1 shot on goal, a wide angle drive off the rush that nearly handcuffed Markstrom, but that was the only shot by the entire team during his 9 minutes at evens (Flames had 5). Just 3/9=33% on the dot. But got the job done on the penalty kill.

#93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 6. Scored the 1-1 goal on a quick release backhand just inside the near post that beat a scrambling Markstrom. Was unable to cut out the lead pass to Tkachuk on the 2-1, even as it wasn’t he who caused the initial problem.

#97 Connor McDavid, 7. Came out guns blazing from the first shift and helped set the early tempo as Edmonton outshot Calgary 8-1 to open the game. Drew a penalty in those opening stages. Robbed on a great opportunity during a second period powerplay, and robbed a second time by the official scorer who took away an assist initially awrded to #97 when RNH popped it home on the continuation seconds later. Went just 2/10=20% on the dot. But his big moment came in the third when he squeezed a quick-release wrister through his nemesis Giordano’s screen, under Markstrom’s arm and just over the line for the game-winner, his third of the season against the Flames and the eighth of his career vs. his personal whipping boys. Now has 40 career game winners, just the sixth Oiler to do so.
