Edmonton Journal:

David Staples • Edmonton Journal:

Connor McDavid, 8. Two goals and an assist, but a few issues on defence. He and Keith allowed a low-high pass and one-timer Grade A shot against in the first. Scored in the second on a dangerous burst into the slot after 25 sweet seconds of o-zone passing with Draisaitl, Puljujarvi and Barrie. He gave up too much time and space on pass on Coyotes’ first goal. Ripped another good power play one-timer in the third. His pass off from the left circle led to Hyman’s power play goal in the third, then he scored his own power player snipe from the left side off a great RNH cross-ice knife of a pass. McD now has 11 points in four games, and the weird thing is he’s yet to bring his best game to the ice.

Jesse Puljujarvi, 6. He opened up the game with a wicked tip off an outside Nurse shot, but then was slow on the back check as Arizona broke in for their own Grade A chance.

Zach Hyman, 8. Two goals. Savvy snipe on Edmonton’s second goal, snapping it it in with little wind-up; there’s a difference between shooting and scoring, as Edmonton’s legendary skill coach Jim Fleming likes to say. Scored his second, another power play gimme, after tic-tac-toe passing, Barrie to McD to Barrie to RNH to McD to Draisaitl and Hyman in the crease.

Leon Draisaitl, 6. Not a bad game but a fairly quiet one. His two faceoff wins kicked off the game-killing power play goals in the third.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 7. Three assists and now with six assists in four games. He lost Jay Beagle in the slot for a clear chance in the first, but Beagle missed the net on his backhander. Sharp pass to send Hyman in on his scoring breakaway. Great pass to McD on his power play goal.

Kailer Yamamoto, 6 . Some good work on the PK. He kept his feet moving and drew a penalty in the third.

Derek Ryan, 6 . Another solid game. Eight wins and just four face off losses.

Warren Foegele, 7. Beaty bull rush in the first, fighting by an Arizona d-man and slashing the puck into the net.

Zack Kassian, 5. Some OK physical and positional play and a smart pass on the Foegele goal.

Devin Shore, 5. He and Keith were culprits on a dangerous cross-seam pass and shot by Jacob Chychrun in the first. He set up Turrris for a hard Grade B one-timer in the third.

Kyle Turris, 6. After an early burst in the third, his line had a strong forechecking shift to settle things. A few shifts later ripped a good shot.

Brendan Perlini, 5. Another quiet game. Time to slot in Tyler Benson?

Darnell Nurse, 8. He played a dominating game, 24:51 of near perfect two-way hockey. He won about 90 per cent of his battles, right? He was given credit for eight hits. Threw a solid takedown slam on Travis Boyd in the first. A few shifts later, the 21st Century’s version of the Edmonton Express pancaked Chychrun to the ice. Late in the first he again showed off his Eddie Shore-vibe, blocked a shot then rushing up ice for a partial breakaway. His hard and sharp charge up ice helped create a 2-on-1 and Hyman’s shorthanded goal.

Tyson Barrie, 5. Two assists, but his defensive woes continued. He did cut down on the major mistakes. Made a turnover and allowed cross-seam on AZ’s first and only goal in the third. Solid quarterback work on the power play, though. He won a key puck battle on Edmonton’s first power play goal.

Duncan Keith, 6. Had another decent Whitey Stapleton kind of game. He got beat on the rush by $6 million man Loui Eriksson, who moved in fast and got off an tricky backhander. But, once again, made numerous solid plays with the puck.

Cody Ceci, 6. Another fine game. Got a Grade A shot with Hyman’s total-eclipse-of-the-sun screen late in the second.

Evan Bouchard, 7. Made a nifty own-zone pass to help set off McDavid and Hyman on a first period 2-on-1. Next, Bouch’s sharp seizure of the puck kicked off Foegele’s great rush. Let loose with a wicked sharp-angle slapper late in the second.

Slater Koekkoek, 5. OK game from OK player.

Mikko Koskinen, 7 . Not a lot of work but, crucially, he handled everything when the game was close. Solid stops on Chychrun and Ryan Dzingel in the first and Eriksson in the second.

Kurt Leavins

MIKE SMITH . 4. A 5-alarm stop off of Lindholm early in the 1st. Made a huge stop on Zegras at point-blank range, allowing his mates to turn it up ice for the 2-1. Allowed the 2-2 after a nice initial stop came back at him, and rolled over his pad. The disruption in front didn’t help. Left after the 4th Anaheim goal with a lower body injury, apparently day-to-day. Looked like it happened on the deke that resulted in the 4-2. Coach Tippet described it post-game as a tweak. Stopped just 9 of 13, although only one of them would be considered to be on the weak side. There was some fast and loose defending in front of him. Wondering if the call has already gone out to Stuart Skinner, just in case.

MIKKO KOSKINEN . 7. The big man stepped into the game when he surely wasn’t expecting to, and performed more than admirably as Mike Smith went to the dressing room with a minor injury. The performance included big back-to-back stops on Rakell and Zegras shortly after taking over in between the pipes. Then an even bigger stop with the game still 5-4 and the Ducks net empty. Ultimately stopped 19 of 20 to earn the Win. About all you can ask of Koskinen, given the difficult circumstances.

CONNOR McDAVID . 6. Connected with a light-touch feed from Draisaitl and then sped into the Ducks zone before feeding it home 5-hole for the 2-1. His initial recovery and pass to Zach Hyman eventually sprung Leon for the EN goal. Had blown the zone on the Lindholm save that Smith was forced to make. Paid that back in the 3rd when he swooped into the crease and swept away what was going to be a sure Ducks goal, the puck stopping within millimeters of crossing the goal line. Also had a couple give-aways. High event game for him.

LEON DRAISAITL . 9. Terrific performance. A tidy chip pass at the attacking blueline was swallowed up by McDavid who deposited it for the 2-1. Then potted his 200th career NHL goal with a 1-timer off a sweet pass from McDavid. A perfect exit pass up to Puljujarvi who then set up Bouchard for the 5-4. Then scooped home the empty-netter to all but finish his 4-point night. Won 2 late faceoffs in his own zone with the game on the line. 69% in the circle. 3 shots. Did have one nasty turnover on a back-hand pass in his own zone. Named the game’s 1st Star. Was a force out there.

JESSE PULJUJARVI . 6. A smart, safe pass which cleared the zone after a Ducks scoring chance, up ice to Draisaitl who fed McDavid for the 2-1. Net-front on the 4-4. A nice, instinctive dish to a charging Bouchard on the 5-4. Drew not one, but two minors on the same sequence to help put his mates on the Power Play, resulting in the 3-2 goal. Did taking an unnecessary slashing penalty 200″ from his own net. Next Period he was unceremoniously dumped in front but no call was forthcoming. Solid.

DARNELL NURSE . 7. Nurse led them club with 27:02 TOI. Picked up a 2nd assist on Kassian’s 2nd. Helped draw a 2nd Period power play by forcing the Ducks player who had gloved the puck. Leaned heavily into Silfverberg in a 2nd Period collision. Should have drawn a hook behind his own net late in the 3rd but no call was forthcoming. The puck, however, did find itself in the Ducks net a few seconds layer. 2 shots, 4 hits. A

TYSON BARRIE . 3. A forgettable evening for Barrie without the puck. Over-committed to the man Darnell Nurse already had on the 3-3. Then stumbled and was beaten cleanly on the 4-3. Found himself on the 3rd pairing with Koekkoek by the end of the night. The -1 flattered him. He’ll be better. Just wasn’t on tonight.

RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS . 7. A slick pass across the goal mouth to a waiting Zach Kassian for the 1-1. Perhaps over-committed a little as both he and Duncan Keith converged on the Ducks attacker, allowing a pass to be slung out into the slot resulting in the 1-0. Jammed the puck on net, the resulting flurry ending with Draisaitl’s 3-2 goal. Fed Hyman for a lovely net-side chance but the winger couldn’t bury it. 4 shots, was also -2 but wasn’t the critical error on either goal against.

ZACH HYMAN . 5. Net-front on the 3-2. Unfortunately blew a wheel on the 3-3. Just missed a tap-in from Nugent-Hopkins in the 3rd. Drew a slashing minor the next shift. A smart bank pass up the wall led to the Draisaitl empty net goal.

KAILER YAMAMOTO . 2. An evening he will want to forget. A slow back-check on the 1-0. Was a distant observer on the 2-2. On the 3-3 he dished the puck meekly in the attacking zone, turning it over. It ended up in the back of the net at the other end not long after. Then he was also late to the shooter on the 4-3. Was demoted to the 4th line after that. -3 in just 10:00.

DUNCAN KEITH . 6. A thudding hit behind the net on Steele from Keith that was probably the hit of the night. A big 2nd Period shot block. Cleared the slot of a dangerous puck in the 3rd. Has been mostly as advertised so far. Lots of smart little plays that add up in an important way. Played 18:33.

CODY CECI . 6. A very solid 20:39 alongside his partner Keith, including 2 shot blocks and a hit. This is what they went out and got him for.

DEREK RYAN . 7. Centered the Oilers best line on the evening. Drew a 2nd Period PP. A clean faceoff win led to a dangerous Evan Bouchard shot. A sharp stick intercepted a Ducks sortie late in the 2nd. A clever 3rd Period take-away and zone clear. 3 shots. 56% on draws.

WARREN FOEGELE . 7. Enjoyed a tremendous performance and drove the net like a tank. A 1st Period take-away and shot on goal. Intercepted a puck behind the attacking goal line and drove the net with it, earning a secondary assist on Kassian’s 1st. Led the team in fancy stats with an All-Events CF of 20-10, 67%. Has been excellent over his first 3 games.

ZACH KASSIAN . 8. This is the version of Zach Kassian that the Anaheim Ducks got a belly-full of in the playoffs a few years back. Highly effective tonight. Scored his 1st of the season when he swept a nifty Nugent-Hopkins pass into the gaping net for the 1-1. Then tied the game at 4 with a nice deflection off a point shot by Evan Bouchard. Led the club with 5 hits. Added 3 shots. All of that in just 12:56 of TOI. Made an impact.

SLATER KOEKKOEK . 5. Late to the net-front man on the 2-2 goal. I know the “plan” was to play Nurse less tonight, but Koekkoek only skated for 8:19 and was buried in the shot metric spreadsheet. I wonder if we’ll see Kris Russell in Arizona?

EVAN BOUCHARD . 8. Probably his best NHL game to date. Bouchard scored his 1st of the season by taking a Jesse Puljujarvi pass to the net but then had the presence of mind to stay with the puck and poke it back in front where it found the Ducks goaltender cheating off the post. Lucky? Sure. But he was rewarded by staying with the play. Earned an assist when Kassian deflected home his point shot. A late 2nd Period shot block. Elevated to the top pairing part-way through the game and was on the ice to protect the lead right at the end. Let loose with a wicked 2nd Period slapper that left the Anaheim goaltender stunned for several minutes. Ended up +2 in just shy of 20 minutes of playing time. Big step up for him.

DEVIN SHORE . 5. A 1st Period take-away. Struggled a bit on draws, -1, 40% AV CF. A little rusty, perhaps, after a brief layoff due to injury.

BRENDAN PERLINI . 4. Elevated to the 2nd line in the 3rd, when Yamamoto was shifted to 4RW. But no shots, 0 hits in just 8:46. Has yet to hit his stride.

KYLE TURRIS . 6. A good chance on a 1st Period tip off a Koekkoek shot. A smart zone clear under pressure the very next shift. A steal and clear the shift after that. Also whistled for a 2nd Period minor. Made the most of his limited time on ice.

Anaheim Ducks.

Bruce McCurdy • Edmonton Journal:

#2 Duncan Keith, 5. Solid most of the night, though he lost track of Andrew Mangiapane on the first Calgary goal, leaving the mercurial Flame alone in front for a close-in deflection and the uncontested rebound. 2 shots, 2 blocks, 1 heavy hit, and plenty of smart little plays.

#5 Cody Ceci, 7. For the second game in a row he sprung a teammate for a breakaway with a lovely stretch pass, this time earning an assist when Puljujarvi buried the chance. Made some nice defensive stops at or outside the Oilers blueline by standing up the rush, and made another key denial when he lowered the boom on a Flame trying the wraparound. Went walkabout on the first Flames goal, leaving Keith to battle 2 opponents in front. 3 blocked shots to lead the Oilers.

#8 Kyle Turris, 4. Played just 5:03 with little impact. 0 shot attempts, 0/3=0% on the dot.

#10 Derek Ryan, 7. Opened the scoring by going to the front of the net and whacking a puck out of mid-air past Jacob Markstrom. His line had a solid game at even strength, and he also chipped in 3:27 on the penalty kill to lead Edmonton forwards. 2 shots, 2 blocks, and a solid 10/15=67% in the faceoff circle.

#13 Jesse Puljujarvi, 8. Got an assist on the powerplay, scored a goal at even strength, and added another helper on the empty netter. The goal was particularly timely, coming just 26 seconds after the Flames had closed to 3-2, as J.P. burst into the open to receive Ceci’s stretch pass, sped in, and buried a laser just inside the stick side post. Played a generally rambunctious game, earning a trip to the penalty box for roughing up Jacob Markstrom and spending plenty of time in the vicinity of the blue paint. He seems to love the Battle of Alberta, having played a number of strong games vs. the Flames last season.

#18 Zach Hyman, 5 (6). His best moment was an own-zone steal followed by a rink-length breakaway dash where he forced a fine save from Markstrom. That was the best offensive moment for his line, which was quiet after their fine debut on Wednesday. Took an unnecessary penalty for closing his hand on the puck.

#20 Slater Koekkoek, 5. Limited action in his season debut, playing just 9:17. Played a competent, quiet game for the most part. His standout moment came when he absorbed a heavy hit at the offensive blueline but made the play to get the puck deep.

#22 Tyson Barrie, 4. Played chase for much of the night and was absolutely demolished in all shot shares, e.g. 7 shots for, 18 against in 17 minutes at 5v5.

#25 Darnell Nurse, 7. Another monster game with 27:35 ice time, putting him at a Pronger-like 59:59 through 2 games. Had a couple of defensive miscues, notably on the Calgary powerplay goal when he got sucked below the goal line even though his partner was already back there. But more good than bad, as usual. Made a fine cross-ice pass to McDavid to earn the primary assist on the game-winner, then made a key defensive play to start the sequence on the empty-netter. 8 more hits; through 2 games the Oiler blueline as a group has 21 hits and Nurse has 16 of them.

#29 Leon Draisaitl, 8 (7). Terrific from the outset, bringing a determined two-way game and absorbing a little abuse in the process. Was unable to find the net on his 5 shots, the best of which involved a dazzling power move around Noah Hanifin and close-in deke that forced Markstrom’s best stop of the night. Did earn 3 assists on the night, 2 of them with excellent passes from his own end of the sheet. Posted an impressive 14/21=67% on the dot, with one of those wins leading directly to the game winner. He also logged a little FOGO (face off, get off) duty on the penalty kill and played a full shift as the only forward on the game’s lone 3v4 situation.

#37 Warren Foegele, 7 (6). His power move in tight to the net set the stage for the Ryan goal, earning Foegele his first point as an Oiler. Found himself on a rare powerplay shift and created traffic and chaos in front that played a role in McDavid’s first tally. Nearly scored himself later, when he made a strong wraparound try. Broke away for another good chance. Stole the puck and drew a penalty. In between times played a hard game in the trenches, running over big Erik Gudbranson at one point.

#41 Mike Smith, 9 (8). Faced a barrage of rubber all night long, at least 14 shots in every period. Battled through traffic to make many of those saves. Made an early statement when he robbed Andrew Mangiapane on a breakaway. Made 9 stops off of Matthew Tkachuk alone, as the Flames linchpin was at his pestering best on this night. Had a couple of iffy moments handling the puck, including one turnover which forced him to make a paddle stop of Milan Lucic’s centring pass with the net gaping. Little chance on either goal, each of which was scored by an unchecked Flame in the low slot. 47 shots, 45 saves, .957 save percentage.

#42 Brendan Perlini, 4. Played just 6:22 with little impact. 1 shot.

#44 Zack Kassian, 6. Oilers needed some response to Calgary’s physicality, and got plenty of it from Kassian who led all forwards on both teams with 6 hits. Wisely kept his gloves on when challenged by the gigantic Nikita Zadorov. Earned a nice assist on Ryan’s opening goal with a good cycle pass to Foegele, but was caught out on Calgary’s first goal when he lost a key battle in the sequence.

#56 Kailer Yamamoto, 5. Earned his team a 4-minute powerplay when he kept his cool against Flames hothead Rasmus Andersson, who from at least one camera angle appeared to headbutt Yamamoto, who came out of it with a bit of blood on his lip and a huge smile underneath it. But later took a pair of penalties of his own through over-aggressive use of his stick, the second of those costing Edmonton on the scoreboard.

#71 Ryan McLeod, 4 (5). Played just 5:23 with little impact. 0 shot attempts, 1/3=33% on the dot.

#75 Evan Bouchard, 6. Sawed off on a range of shot metrics and more importantly, on the scoreboard, at least at 5v5. Led all Oilers with 4:08 on the penalty kill, though he did have one bad turnover on that unit that led to a pair of good chances. But had one of his own on the shorthanded unit when he joined the rush, took Ryan’s feed, beat the defender with a toe drag and tested the netminder with a backhand drive.

#93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 5. A quiet and largely ineffective game, salvaged somewhat by the assist he drew on the game winner with some customary fine puck movement on the powerplay. His line got smoked in possession, generating just 1 shot on net (6 against) during his 12:40 at even strength. A dismal 2/12=16% on the faceoff dot. On the bright side, made 0 mistakes leading to Grade A scoring chances against, taking the edge off those weak shot shares.

#97 Connor McDavid, 9. Fired 8 shots on net and converted 3 of them into goals. His tenth career hat trick and already his third against the Flames, a rival he loves to torment. Now has 26 career goals vs. Calgary, TEN more than any other opponent. He jumped on a fortunate deflection and buried it top shelf to extend Edmonton’s lead to 2-0. The 3-0 tally was more of a designed play, a one-time blast off a Nurse tee, and the first success of a new skill he’s been working hard to perfect. His unmatchable speed was the key component to his third tally, the empty netter that sealed the deal and prompted a barrage of hats on the ice at Rogers Place. Did have a couple of iffy moments defensively but nothing costly. Bottom line: Edmonton’s game-breaker broke open another game.

Big night for 2020 4th round pick Carter Savoie. He sniped a hat-trick and added 3 assists for a 6-point night as Denver beat Air Force 8-0.
